Induction of Apoptosis by Kilkyoung-Sagunjatang and Kilkyoung-Samuyltang in A549 Human Non-small-cell Lung Cancer Cells

Abstract
In the present study, we investigated the anti-proliferative activity of the water extract of Kilkyoung-Sagunjatang (K-SGJT) and Kilkyoung-Samuyltang (K-SMT) in A549 human non-small-cell lung cancer cell lines. We found that exposure of A549 cells to K-SGJT and K-SMT resulted in the growth inhibition in a dose-dependent manner as measured by trypan blue count and MTT assay. The anti-proliferative effect of K-SGJT treatment in A549 cells was associated with morphological changes, formation of apoptotic bodies and increased populations of apoptotic-sub G1 phase. The anti-proliferative effect of K-SMT treatment in A549 cells was associated G1 arrest in a dose-dependent manner as measured by flow cytometry analysis. The present results suggest that K-SGJT and K-SMT have divergent biological functions and additional studies will be needed to identify the active compounds that confer the anti-cancer activity of K-SGJT and K-SMT.
